Royal Oman Police and Bank Muscat strengthen anti-fraud partnership
Cases of electronic fraud have been increasing around the world over the past few years and often cause tremendous financial and psychological harm to both individuals and businesses alike. As digital payments get more and more popular, criminals from across the globe have increased their efforts to scam the public through a number of deceptive activities. Against this background, the Royal Oman Police and Bank Muscat have announced that they continue to partner closely in implementing a joint anti-fraud campaign as part of which, new anti-fraud videos were released recently.
These videos seek to educate the general public about the dangers posed by fraudsters who use a variety of social engineering techniques. Victims are tricked through scams involving Romantic Fraud (fake marriages), fake trading in crypto currencies and being convinced to become a “money mule” to transfer illegal funds to other bank accounts. The campaign videos point out some of the ways in which scamsters operate and compel victims to do their bidding through emotional appeals or even blackmail. This new step is an addition to the 3-year campaign run jointly by the Royal Oman Police and Bank Muscat. The videos will be posted on social media channels of the bank as well as those of radio channels, e-newspapers, news sites and daily newspapers. Beside the videos, interviews and competitions will also be held to raise awareness.
Bank Muscat has been stepping up efforts to combat these types of fraud by partnering regularly with a number of institutions and authorities including the Royal Oman Police, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and other institutions. The bank has reminded the public that they can contact the Royal Oman Police at the toll-free number 80077444 for advice and queries regarding electronic fraud.
The excellent efforts of the Royal Oman Police in promoting awareness related to electronic fraud is today well recognised both by Omani society and by international organisations. It is noteworthy that earlier in 2021, the Royal Oman Police won the Award for the Best Awareness Film in Combating Cybercrimes at the 44th Conference of Arab Police and Security Leaders 2021 held in Tunis.
